Ruckus on hijab continues in Karnataka: State government said- dress code will have to be accepted, High Court will hear on February 8




Amid the hijab ruckus in Karnataka, the government has decided to keep the dress code rule in schools in force. After the meeting chaired by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, it was said that the dress code would not be removed till the hearing in the High Court. The High Court is hearing the matter on February 8.


After the meeting, Karnataka Education Minister BV Nagesh told reporters that the matter of dress is still in the court. The Chief Minister has held talks with the Law and Education Department. They have advised us to apprise the court about the stand of the government after taking the opinion of the Advocate General. The Law Department apprised the meeting that what the law and rules say.

Political rhetoric too intensified
Political rhetoric has also intensified over the controversy surrounding schoolgirls wearing hijab. Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi tweeted that we are ruining the future of India’s daughters by letting hijab come in the way of students’ education. Maa Saraswati gives knowledge to all. She doesn’t discriminate. At the same time, Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly, Siddaramaiah also questioned the intention of the government. Earlier, some students in Udupi had reached the school draped in saffron.

The hijab controversy started in Karnataka in early January, when six Muslim girl students at a college in Udupi were adamant on wearing the hijab in the classroom. The principal of the college had said that girl students can wear hijab in the college campus, but it is not allowed in the classroom.

After this decision of the school administration, the girl students started protesting. Soon there was a protest in many parts of the state regarding the hijab. The hijab controversy came to the fore in Karnataka in the year 2018. Then a single bench of the High Court had ruled that wearing hijab in the classroom was wrong.
